How Al2O3 works

 

  • Al2O3 provides a stable, high-surface-area support for active metals like nickel (Ni), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh). This allows the active metal to be dispersed as nanoparticles, increasing the number of active sites.
  • Its mesoporous structure allows gaseous pollutants to enter and remain in the pores for longer periods, increasing the rate of reaction.
  • Al2O3 has acid sites that can contribute to catalytic activity, such as in the cracking of hydrocarbons.

 

Examples of AL2O3 organic waste gas treatment catalyst

 

  • Ni/Al2O3 catalysts: Used to remove tar from waste gases produced during biomass gasification. They can achieve high tar removal efficiency, often over 99%.
  • Pt/Al2O3 catalysts: Used for the deoxygenation of landfill gas by removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Coke formation can occur from VOCs, but the catalyst remains effective even with significant coking.
  • Rh/Al2O3 catalysts: Used for the removal of pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in waste incineration. The presence of other pollutants can affect performance, so a catalyst might be modified (e.g., to include sodium) to improve stability.
  • Fe2O3/Al2O3 catalysts: Used in catalytic combustion for treating waste gases.
